Mountains in Kenya

If you love challenges, mountains in Kenya are waiting for you. They are the perfect getaways for adventure sports lovers. Trekking, hiking, bird watching, etc are all undertaken during tours to Kenyan mountains.

Mount Elgon - Named after the Elgonyi tribe who once lived in the huge caves here, Elgon is basically an extinct volcano on the Uganda-Kenya border. It is also known as the 'Ol Doinyo Ilgoon' or the Breast Mountain in Maasai. The mountain forms the conglomeration for rivers Suam, Nzoia and Turkwel. Kitale is the town lying on the foothills of this mountain. Mount Elgon has one of the largest intact calderas of the world. Two Mount Elgon National Parks surround the area on both sides. It has a big elephant habitation.

Mount Kenya - The highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest peak in Africa, Mount Kenya stands more than 5000 meters above sea level. A huge variety of flora and fauna adorn this region. An extinct volcano that last erupted about three million years ago, this mountain is home to one of the Global Atmospheric Watch's atmosphere monitoring stations. You can find many small glaciers scattered here and there as this mountain remains perpetually covered in ice.

Western Highlands - Spectacular waterfalls are the highlight of this region located in the northern part of the Rift Valley. A paradise for those who love bird watching, these hill ranges are home to a big species of migratory birds.

Mount Longonot - A dormant volcano in the southeast of Lake Nirvasha, this mountain last erupted in the 1860s.

Simba Hills - This place is just right for adventure sports. Trekkers love the challenges en route to this mountain. Forests, river valleys, high cliffs are all encountered during this journey. These hills are located in the northern side of Kenya.
