Mt Kenya National Park

Mt Kenya National Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. You will find luxurious growth of rainforests on its lower slopes between altitudes of 2100 to 2400 meters, while dense belt of bamboo are found at an altitude of 2, 400-2850 meters. Between the altitude 3, 000 m and 3, 500 m, you'll find shrubs with small leaves like African Sage, Protea and Helicrysum. The lower alpine or moorland zone is found between 3, 400-3, 800 meters. Above the 3500 m contour is the Afro-alpine zone, a moorland characterized by tussock grasses, senecios and lobelias. The Alpine zone lasts up to 4, 350 meters, and above this is the zone of glaciers and volcanoes.


Like its vegetation, the Mt Kenya National Park is also renowned for its rich and diverse wildlife and bird population. The Park also shelters a rich variety of birds, which include Lammergeyer, Verrauxs Eagle, White-backed Vultures, Crowned-hawk Eagles, Long-Crested Eagles, Green Ibis, African Black Duck, Great Sparrow Hawks, Hornbill, Red-headed Parrots, Bronze-napped Pigeons, and Mountain and Auger Buzzards. Sunbirds and Cuckoo Falcons are also commonly seen in the park.
