Ecotourism in Kenya

Ecotourism in Kenya is not something new. In fact, the country has been one of the pioneers of the ecotourism movement that has changed the very way the world looks at tourism. Ever since it's independence in 1963, Kenya has greatly relied on its tourism sector to generate a major chunk of its revenue. However, with time the ill effects of over dependence on tourism began to show. It was at this very point of time that the government of Kenya started putting more emphasis on sustainable tourism that can also be described as ecotourism.

Kenya's tourism policy heavily relies on the maintaining the bio-diversity of its natural and cultural resources. In fact, it is always at work to maximize the sustainable use of these resources and focus on the well being of the host community at the same time. So it is more like balancing both ends and making sure that the needs of the future generations are not compromised.

Today ecotourism is mentioned in the same breath with "responsible tourism" that seeks to preserve the precious resources of a country or region. Ecotourism in Kenya has brought about a lot of benefits to the country. Apart from preserving Kenya's rich treasures from falling in the hands of herders and loggers, it has also proved to be a huge revenue grosser for the country that has also benefited that local populace at the same time.

With the founding of the Ecotourism Society of Kenya (ESOK), this sustainable form of tourism has scaled even greater heights. The main objective of this society is to promote responsible tourism and initiate new approaches towards its development. There are many such groups that have dedicated themselves to the socio-economic development of Kenya.

A number of community ecotourism projects have been initiated over the past years. These projects aim at generating economic output without disrupting the natural and cultural set up. The Kimana Group Ranch, Mwaluganje Ranch and the Illingwesi Group Ranch are some brilliant examples that stand out among others.
