Blessed by wide-ranging topography and climate, this small central European country is slowly proving to be a hotspot for tourists. The country offers many locations that are ideal for adventure sports as well as relaxation. Here is a lowdown on the different types of tours available in the country.
Adventure Tours
Cycling: The best cycling routes include tours through Plitvice Lakes, Istria, forests of Gorski Kotar, hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje or the fertile plains of Slavonia and Turopolje.
Horse Riding: Your tour should include the slopes of Papuk and the silent wilderness of Žumberak, the Alkars of Senj and the valley of the River Cetina.
Skiing: The ski slopes are primarily located on the northern slopes of Medvednica. Bjelolasica, the Croatian Olympic Center, has much to offer. The Platak resort is situated only 30 km from Rijeka.
Fishing: The whole Adriatic Sea is open for fishing and special limitations are applied in aquatoria of national parks (Kornati, Brijuni, Krka, Mljet), and for some smaller locations.
Rafting: Tourists can enjoy rafting though River Kupa, Dobra, Mrežnica, Una, Zrmanja and Krka.
White-Water Kayaking: All major tourist centres have kayaking opportunities down the Kupa, Gacka, Zrmanja, Trebižat.
Canoeing: The Karstic areas have an abundance of in limestone barriers and waterfalls and thick growth of vegetation and are best for canoeing and kayaking.
Speleology: The more attractive caves Istria, Gorski kotar, Medvednica, Papuk, are open to visitors with no experience in speleology.
Beach Tours
Naturism: Along the entire Adriatic coast, from Savudrija to Dubrovnik, naturists can achieve the fine balance between man and nature through sports and healthy food. Enjoy the benefits of sun, water and air, life in nature and with nature.
Nautical Tourism: Croatia is home to 50 marinas; all gathered together under the Croatian Marinas Group, with a capacity of over 13, 200 sea berths and 4, 500 dry berths.
Fishing: The whole Adriatic Sea is open for fishing and special limitations are applied in aquatoria of national parks (Kornati, Brijuni, Krka, Mljet), and for some smaller locations.
Speleology: The more attractive caves Istria, Gorski kotar, Medvednica, Papuk, are open to visitors with no experience in speleology. Speleo-diving is slowly gaining in popularity. Many speleological sites reveal their most interesting features and links with other underground channels and only diving can reveal these to you. |
Islands Tours
The Brijuni Or Brioni Islands: The group of islands consists of two larger ones and 12 smaller ones and they were given National Park status in 1983. The largest island is Veli Brijun. It is covered with Mediterranean vegetation. The island's safari park is home to zebras, giraffes, bison, camels and deer.
Cres & Losinj Islands: This is the largest group of islands and equates to 16% of the total surface area of all the Adriatic islands. The main resort is the town of Mali Losinj while the tourist area is centered in Cikat Bay. If you are in Mali Losinj, don't miss the harbour view, which is the most beautiful in the entire Adriatic. For wind surfing and gorgeous beach hit Cikat Bay.
KRK: Though this island is not the most beautiful or greenest but it is geared to tackle tourists and their needs. The main resorts are Baska, Malinska, Omisalj, Vrbnik, Punat and Krk. Town. Krk Town is famous for St. Mary's Cathedral, the seat of the Krk bishopric.
RAB Island: The island is covered with pine forests and beautiful sandy beaches and is well known for its mild climate. The main resort, Rab Town, is full of medieval buildings built during Venetian rule in the 13th century.
PAG: It is well known for its sheep's cheese, lace making and the beautifully preserved Pag Town, built according to plans by the famous Croatian Renaissance builder, Juraj Dalmatinac.
Kornati Islands: Most of the area is a national park. The natural beauty comprises numerous coves and crystal clear blue waters.
BRAC: The Island, one of the sunniest with 2, 700 hours of sun annually, is known for its agricultural products, good wine, olive oil, figs, nectarines and other fruits.
Korcula: This island is known for its dense forest and the ancient Greeks called the island Black Korcula (Kerkyra melaina) for this reason.
HVAR It is even sunnier than Brac, but thankfully there is enough rain to keep the island green and to maintain the beautiful fields of lavender, rosemary, sage, marjoram and thyme and the carefully cultivated vineyards.
VIS: Vis is the oldest established town in Dalmatia. Some of the most exclusive wines in Croatia are produced there, such as Plavac and Vugava.
MLJET: Legend has it that Odysseus fell in love with the island and stayed there for seven years. Over two-thirds of the island is covered by forest with the western half of the island declared a National Park.
Kolocep, Lopud & Sipan (The Elafit Islands): These are actually six islands in the group, and they were particularly famous as the most skilful mariners came from there.
National Parks Tours
KRKA National Park: The KRKA National Park is situated in the Sibenik region. This area has warm and dry summers and coupled with cooling sea breezes and the Adriatic, it shlud be on your must-see.
Risnjak: The Risnjak National Park is at the northern end of a Gorski Kotar. Easily accessible, owing to its proximity of the Zagreb-Rijeka road, the area is a popular destination with Croats for walking, climbing and mountaineering.
Plitvice Lakes National Park: The Park has several caves and flower meadows. Brown bear is found here among other animal species. The Lake areas are lovely and cool in summer, icy and calm in winter, yellow and ochre in autumn, green and fresh in spring.
MLJET Island National Park: The Park is characterized by two deep bays, which are called lakes due to their narrow passages to the open sea (Veliko and Malo Jezero or the Great Lake and the Small Lake). Both lakes are surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation. There is a tiny island in one of the lakes, called Melita (Mljet), with 12th century Benedictine monastery. Legend has it that Mljet was holiday destination of Greek hero Ulysses.
Paklenica National Park: This national park is located in the most attractive part of southern Velebit. The main attractions of the park are two canyons --- Velika and Mala Paklenica, vertically cut into the mountain from the sea to the Velebit's highest peaks.
Brijuni Islands: The islands are rich in natural beauties, flora and fauna. There is an attractive archaeological site - Byzantine castrum and luxurious Roman villa, Ethnographic collection plus collection of frescoes, Archaeological Museum and natural history museum.
Sjeverni (North) Velebit: Velebit is an untamed mountainous ridge located adjacent to the Adriatic. Velebit's size ensures that only on the coastal slopes is it typically Mediterranean. On the top of the ridge the climate is consistently continental, with intense summers exacerbated by the scarcity of surface water and then followed by cold, harsh winters.
Kornati Islands: The landscape of chalk limestone is covered with bushes of rosemary, juniper, lavender, thyme, myrtle and sage. There are 89 islands, islets and reefs within the area of Kornati National Park and this makes it the most indented group of islands in the Mediterranean.
Nature Parks Tours
Biokovo Mountain: This mountain is the only part of the Dinaric Alps that gets so close to the sea. And this unique location is the reason behind its popularity as well as its varied flora and fauna.
Kopacki Rit: The 42, 000-acre park is covered in verdant vegetation and is home to about 250 bird species, including rare varieties such as the black stork as well as wild goose, wild duck, big white heron, white stork, black stork, white-tailed eagle, big crow, coot, seagull, tern, kingfisher, woodpecker, green woodpecker.
Lonjsko Polje: This nature park is located in the flood plains between Sava River and Moslavacka Gora Mountain. Watch out for rare bird species like white-tailed and short-toed eagle, white egret, grey heron and black stork.
Telascica - Dugi Otok: Telascica is very popular among sailing crowd because it is location is a safe haven yachts and boats.
UCKA: The coastal slopes of Ucka are covered in Mediterranean vegetation and other parts have oak and chestnut forests. Ucka's summit is worth to climb for the panoramic view of the Gulf of Kvarner bay.
PAPUK: The nature park has water springs at Cadavica, Karasica and Pakra and this adds to its charm and freshness during the hot seasons.
Sjeverni (North) Velebit: Velebit is perfect for those looking for some days in solitude. It is possible to hike the whole length of the ridge, following Premuzic's path and staying in mountain huts, while the more compact Paklenica National Park also offers excellent walking opportunities.
Vransko Jezero (Vransko Lake) is the largest lake in Croatia, located in area called Ravni Kotari, northeast of Pakostane. The area comprises 30 square kilometers of marshes and waters and is rich in fish and bird life.
Zumberak - Samoborsko Gorje: A hilly region near Croatian capital Zagreb comprising 300 square kilometers is rich in beech and chestnut forests as well as various caves and abysses and underground streams.
