This is also the region for viewing the best of Baroque towns and palaces in the country. Geographically, the region is continental, hilly and mountainous and differs from Slavonia or coastal Croatian areas in terms of landscape as well as climate.

KRAPINA the main cultural centre of Hrvatsko Zagorje has a rich historical and cultural heritage. However, the major tourist attraction of the city remains of the Pleistocene (prehistoric) man of the Neanderthal type (Homo crapiniensis) on the Husnjakovo hill. This is one of the most important Neanderthal sites in the world and was discovered at the end of the 19th century.
GOSPIC, the main town in Lika, is the birthplace of famous Croatian scientist Nikola Tesla. Since the town is located near Velebit and Plitvice lakes, it is the starting point of several routes towards Velebit.
DELNICE, the tourist hub in Gorski Kotar, has hotels, sports facilities and hunting grounds. Located at the base of Japlenski Vrh (Japlenski Peak) are two ski-jumps. The place has a century-old tradition of excursions and health tourism due to its natural beauties and climatic features. |
Delnice can be reached in an hour from Rijeka and the nearby resorts on the Kvarner riviera and is an ideal place for day trips and short visits to the peaks of Gorski Kotar (Drgomalj, Petehovac).
