Climate of Italy

The climate of Italy is predominantly Mediterranean, which varies according to changing altitudes and distance from the sea. Italy's climate varies from the severely cold in the northerly mountainous region to hot and dry in the hills and plains of the south. The mountainous areas in the north, particularly around the Alps enjoy cold Alpine winters followed by warm and wet summers.

In the mountains temperatures drop quickly with heavy winter snowfalls with a January average temperature on alpine ski resorts hovering around - 8°C. The Po Plain and the central Apennines also experience cold and foggy winter. Cities in northern Italy such as Milan, Venice and Torino can become excessively cold in winter with temperatures falling to 0-7°C (32-45°F).

The southern Italy mainly has a Mediterranean climate with drier and warmer winter and dry and hot summer with occasional rainfall and thunderstorms. Summers in south are mainly influenced by sirocco, an excessively hot wind blowing from the North African coast.

July is the hottest month in Italy when temperatures can reach to 30°C/86°F in the southern region, while January is the coldest month with temperatures going well below freezing point in the northern Alpine region. November is the wettest month in Italy with an average rainfall of 12.9cm, while July is the driest month with an average rainfall of 1.5cm. September-October and April-May are best times to visit Italy whether you plan to travel to north or to south of the country. For beach lovers July and August are ideal.
