Singapore Zoo, spread over 28 hectares of land, was opened on 27th June 1973. It was the brainchild of Dr. Ong Swee Law, the Chairman of the Public Utilities Board in 1969. Located near the Selatar Reservoir, the Singapore Zoo is also called the 'Open Zoo' because of the presence of flowing waters, verdant vegetation and moats create the impression of a jungle and hides the barriers.
The Singapore Zoo started its journey with 270 animals and 72 species in 1973 and has come a long way with 2, 000 animals and 240 species till date. One can see the display of various breeding animals and harmonious co-existence of different animals in one enclosure. The prime attraction of the Singapore Zoo is the Animal Shows, which includes Primate and Reptile Show and Elephant and Sea Lion Show. The Animal Shows can be seen from the Amphitheater with a long pool and glass panels. Another major attraction in the Singapore Zoo is the underwater viewing of animals like Polar Bear, Crocodiles, Ghariyals, Sea Lions, Penguins and Pygmy Hippos.
