Festivals of Spain provide information regarding the festivals that are celebrated in Spain throughout the year. Spanish festivals are religious in origin. January
On January 6 Reyes Magos is celebrated throughout Spain. It is also known as the Epiphany in English. The evening of January 5 is a time of extreme enthusiasm for children. Gifts are distributed and Floats, bands and dancers move in the streets of the major towns and cities.
On January 17 another famous festival named as Fiestas de San Antonio Abad is celebrated in Mallorca. According to the tradition the youth compete over a cockrell placed at the top of the Pi de Sant Antoni (a greased pole).
February
During the second week of February, a carnival is held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. The carnival is celebrated with a great pomp and show. There are fancy-dress parades accompanied by musicians. Carnivals are held before Lent period at Shrovetide. In the festival of Pero Palo (held in Caceres) in late February, the community gathers to share old traditions.
March
In Valencia just before spring period, Fallas de San Jose is held. The night is welcomed with a parade and bonfires. Another important festival of Spain is Semana Santa or Easter Holy Week.
April
An April Fair in Seville greets the month of April. Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos (the Moors and Christians) is celebrated. During the festival Alcoy in Alicante puts on display with battles, speeches, processions, plays and dances. Fireworks and the ringing of bells accompany the battle.
May
In Toledo to celebrate Corpus Christi, procession is held. Throughout the village of Cieza in Murcia on Dia de la Cruz or Holy Cross day crosses of flowers are set up to make the village look ravishingly beautiful.
June
At the festival of Hogueras de San Juan, the streets in Alicante are often decorated with branches and leaves. Straw simulacras are burnt. While undertaking pilgrimages sanjuanera songs are sung.
July
In early July in Pamplona Fiesta de San Fermin or the Running of the Bulls is held with immense excitement.
August
Semana Grande is held during August on the north coast.
September
This month brings fun and frolic with the Festival Internacional de Folklore en el Mediterraneo (International Festival of Mediterranean Folklore). The festival is celebrated for three days with dances, songs and general folklore of many Mediterranean cultures. La Rioja Wine Festival, also known as Fiestas de la Vendimia Riojana is celebrated at the time of the harvesting of the grapes
