South America has the maximum number of active volcanoes in the world and spans the greatest length of any continental volcanic region. Eastern Pacific's Nazca Plate beneath South America has led to the emergence of one of the highest mountain ranges in the world and also to the highest volcano, Nevados Ojos del Salado.
Argentina comes before all other places when the number of volcanoes comes into count with 214 volcanoes and is only second to Japan in the number of Holocene volcanoes with nearly 112 such volcanoes. It is believed that the total number of volcanoes on Argentina Chile border is somewhere around 1800 and approximately around 28 are active.
