San Juan that was founded in the year 1521 is also known as La Ciudad Amurallada meaning a walled city. In the year 1508, Juan Ponce de León founded the original settlement, Caparra that is now known as Pueblo Viejo. After a year, this place was abandoned and the population was moved to Old San Juan. It is one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second oldest city in the Americas.
A major tourist resort, San Juan has three distinct areas namely Old San Juan, the Beach & Resort area, and other outlying communities, the most important ones being Río Piedras, Hato Rey, Puerta de Tierra, and Santurce. Río Piedras was founded in 1714 but became incorporated into San Juan in 1951.

Other famous sights of the city are Casa de los Contrafuertes, San Juan Beach and Resort, Casa del Libro, Puerta de San Juan and La Princesa.
