You can very easily transition from bustling cities to quiet open spaces, so take time to plot out your destinations based on whether you would like some seclusion or to be in the midst of everything. When it comes time to plan your trip, consider these major destinations:
Sydney
The oldest city and capital, Sydney is famous worldwide for its distinct Opera House and nearby Harbour Bridge. Having hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 2000, its profile as a destination has raised to new levels. Surrounded by nature parks and nestled on some of the finest spots for surfing in the world, Sydney is more than just a major business center for Oceania. The City Centre is a hub for finance and commerce, where skyscrapers stretch high above classic Victorian buildings like the Strand Arcade and museums like The Art Gallery of New South Wales. If you’d rather bask in the sun, head to Bondi or Manly Beaches, two of the best of more than half a dozen picturesque oceanfront locations in the area.
Melbourne
Regarded as more of a cultural center than Sydney, you’ll find Melbourne at the mouth of the Yarra River on Port Phillip Bay. There are numerous places to shop and an extensive collection of museums, but many visitors like to use the city as a starting point for wilder adventures, too. Nature lovers will spend the day hiking through mountainous Grampians National Park before returning to the eclectic Fitzroy district for dinner at a trendy restaurant. Others choose to make a day trip of driving the Great Ocean Road to see the spectacular southeastern coast of Australia and arrive for a late bite in the Italian community of Carlton.
Brisbane
Known as the friendliest city on the eastern coast of Australia, Brisbane is the fastest-growing city in the country and maintains a bit of youthful exuberance. Take the winding drive to the top of Mount Coot-tha, a lightly-forested peak that overlooks the city. The Botanic Gardens and Planetarium is a great place for an afternoon stroll, or you can opt to wander one of the many hiking trails nearby. A quiet cruise down the Brisbane River might be a good way to get acquainted with the city’s gorgeous skyline or, if you’d like to shop to you drop, a trip to Queen Street Mall could hit your fancy.
Perth
Relaxed and unpretentious, Perth is the isolated capital of the state of Western Australia. Divided by the Swan River, it’s highly-regarded for its extensive and relatively unpopulated beaches – particularly on Rottnest Island, off the coast. The Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park is a popular spot for animal lovers, as semi-wild kangaroos often wonder along paths frequented by human feet. And, if you’re in the mood for a glass of wine, the hills of Swan Valley host vineyards with several varietals. Though it’s not quite as famous as the Margaret River area, it’s close to the city and a great way to spend a day tasting local offerings. After all that wandering around, stop in the Mount Lawley or Northbridge areas for a delicious meal from one of a number of tremendous restaurants in these cultural districts.
The Outback
Many tourists in search of a more natural experience schedule time for a “walkabout.” An aboriginal tradition, native guides can help you unplug from civilization and spend a few days drinking in the abundant beauty of the Australian Outback. The sheer size of the area means you can access it from nearly any state in the country. Depending on your location and desire to encounter the outdoors, tours can last anywhere from several hours to several days. The Blue Mountains are a popular location, as the sandstone caves and waterfall provide a tremendous backdrop for an afternoon swim but, if you’d like to see something a bit more authentic, take a drive to small towns like Alice Springs and Broken Hill or visit the red rocks of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
