Transportation in Kauai is easy and convenient. There are many modes of transport to take you around the city. Kauai is a beautiful city that has breathtaking natural surroundings as well as many historical sites. The different systems of transportation would help you go around the city without any hassle.

Ground transportation in Kauai comprises buses, mopeds, taxis, shuttles and rental cars. There are many companies that provide tours on limousines, four-wheel drive vehicles, vans, mini-buses and motor coaches.

You can get around the beautiful city of Kauai in a rented car. There are many car renting companies that are located in the region. These are: Budget, Hawaiian riders, Thrifty and Westside U-drive. The rural roads, fabulous vistas and the rugged coastlines of the region can be best viewed by going on a trip on a rented car. You can easily rent a sporty or an exotic car with a license while you are here. Besides the cars you can also rent scooters, bikes and motorcycles to tour the city.

You can also avail the bus service while you are on tours to the city. Kauai is a circular region and there is one highway that circles the island. The bus system in the region runs on one route and also offers door-to-door Para transit service. The bus provides service to the airport and also limited service to Poipu and Koloa. Every bus displays a destination sign on the front as well as the curb side. It shows the route number.

Para transit services are available for the people who meet the following criteria:

  • If human service agencies require transportation for the participants of the program.
  • If there are seniors who request for transportation service. They should be above 60 years of age and be registered with county transportation agency.
  • If there are people who are certified under American Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • The visitors would have to book 24 hours in advance for the transportation service. Most of the hotels in the region provide the facility of airport shuttle. Some of the cab companies are: North shore cab, South shore cab, Kauai taxi, City cab, Akiko's taxi and Brian’s taxi.


The passengers of a vehicle should wear seatbelts and infants must be properly strapped into the car seat. The people of the region follow "aloha" traffic customs. It is recommended that people drive slow, yield to others and not tailgate. While on a one lane bridge, it is recommended that you yield to oncoming traffic. The many different modes of transportation would ensure that you have a pleasant trip around the island.
