Langkawi is a multi-racial society comprising of Chinese, Thai, Indian and the indigenous people of the region. Subsequently Langkawi also boasts of people belonging to different religion. Therefore it is natural that the festivals celebrated in the region reflect the multi-ethnicity and cultural diversity of the region. Some of the major festivals celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and fanfare are Chinese New Year, National Day, Malaysia Fest, Deepavali, Christmas and Hari Raya Aidil Fitri .
Chinese New Year is celebrated in the month of January or February. During this auspicious festival friends and relatives share "angpows" or red packets containing gifts of cash that signifies prosperity. Feasts are common during the festival and family reunion dinners are integral aspects of the festival. Lion dances are also performed to drive away evil spirits and to welcome the lunar New Year.
National Day is celebrated on 31 August. On this day the country of Malaysia gained independence and parades and shows occur all through the region. The towns and cities of Langkawi are decorated and embellished with lights and the festival is celebrated with much fervor.
Malaysia Fest is celebrated in the month of September and continues for two weeks. During this festival all the major hotels and shopping complexes and malls are decorated and the culture, cuisine and handicrafts of the various states are showcased.
Deepavali or the "Festival of Lights" occurs in the month of October or November. Deepavali is celebrated by the Hindus; the festival marks the victory of good over evil. During the festival people adorn their houses with lights and sweets are distributed.
Christmas is celebrated on 25 December by Christians with a lot enthusiasm and fervor. Midnight services are held at churches of the region on Christmas eve and shopping centers, hotels, and children's homes echo with beautiful carols. The festival is also celebrated by the non-Christians with a lot excitement.
Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is a Muslim festival that is celebrated after the month-long Ramadan or the fasting month. People visit the mosques during this festival and pray to God, thus ushering in the New Year.
Other events and festivals are also celebrated in the region like the Langkawi Water Festival which celebrates water sports and other beach activities.
