Malacca boasts of a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society and the Festivals in Malacca reflects the multiculturalism of the city. People of different religion and community live in peace and harmony and celebrate their festivals. The major festivals in Malacca are Chinese New Year, Christmas, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and Hari Raya Puasa.
Chinese New Year is celebrated in the month of January or February. It is celebrated with feasts and lion dances. Christmas is celebrated on 25 December with a lot of fervor. Midnight services are held at churches of the city and on the eve of Christmas shopping centers, hotels, and children's homes reverberate with beautiful carols.
Hari Raya Puasa is a Muslim festival that is celebrated in the end of April. It occurs after the month of feasting or Ramadan. It is a joyous occasion for Muslims and after attending prayers at the mosque, the Muslims visit their elders, relatives and friends. Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is also a Muslim festival that marks the end of the month-long Ramadan or the fasting month. During this festival people visit mosques and pray to God, thus ushering in the New Year.
Malacca is also famous for the Lantern Festival. During the festival houses are decorated with lights, and cultural performances and family games are held. The festival is specially celebrated at the A' Famosa Golf Resort.
The Malacca Carnival is celebrated in the month of August. The festival continues for over a month. During the festival varieties of exhibitions like the industrial exhibition and tourism exposition are held along with traditional cultural performances and shows by local artists.
Malacca also hosts the Melaka Sea Carnival. It is celebrated on the National Day on 31st August, at the Klebang Besar Beach. Varieties of competition take place during the festival like competitions for windsurfing and boating for local and international teams.
Apart from theses festival there are a number of other festival that are celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and vigor in the state of Malacca.
