Festivals in Penang

Penang is one of the important states in Malaysia. It is also an important tourist destination because of innumerable local attractions and festivals. Festivals in Penang are colorful and are celebrated by locals and tourists from all over the world in equal pomp and grandeur.

There are numerous festivals and cultural programs that are held every in the state of Penang. This gives us an idea about the rich culture and heritage of Malaysia. The Penang Festival calendar begins with the Chinese New Year celebrations which are usually celebrated in late January or early February that marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar year. Traditionally on this day, parents would present their children with money wrapped in an angpow or red packet. Friends and relatives visit each other on the 1st and 2nd day of the 15 day celebration. A huge family dinner is organized on the last day of the festival. Chap Gow Meh is celebrated on the 15th night of the first month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The highlight of this festival is the orange throwing ceremony.

Another major festival celebrated in Penang is Thaipusam which is a tribute to Lord Subramanium and the highlight of this festival is the carrying of cavadis by Hindu devotees in order to fulfill their vows. The Birthday of the Goddess of Mercy is celebrated around March and July when worshippers flock to the Goddess of Mercy Temple to pay their respects. Lord Buddha's Birthday also known as Wesak Day is the day when Hindu worshippers flock to the temples and celebrations continue late into the night. Hari Raya Pausa is major Muslim festival that falls according to the Muslim Calendar and has no fixed date. The festival marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. During the festival, houses are brightly lit and decorated.

Other religious festivals celebrated include Birthday of HM The Yang Di-pertua Agong which is celebrated on the first day of June with parades and festivities. Saint Anne's Feast is celebrated at the Church of St Anne from 26th to 28th July, with mass and a candlelight procession within the church compound.

Penang also celebrates the National Day of Malaysia on 31st August which is Malaysia's Independence Day. Deepavali is also celebrated which is a Hindu festival marking the victory of good or evil. Christmas is also celebrated by all with equal pomp and grandeur along with Christians with midnight mass in all churches.
