Festivals in Sabah

Sabah like most Malaysian states celebrates all major festivals in the Malaysian Calendar. Celebrations are grand and colorful, like most places in Malaysia.

Some of the major festivals celebrated in Sabah include Chinese New Year when friends and relatives great each other and give red packets, known as ang pows which are a token of prosperity. Celebrations are held with feats and lion dances to ward off evil spirits and usher in the lunar New Year. Family reunion dinners are a must among Chinese on the eve of the New Year. The celebrations are usually held in February.

The Mount Kinabalu Mountain Bike Challenge is held every year during the month of March. The Sabah Festival is held in April or May where 30 colorful ethnic communities gather together with their gongs and showcase their dancing skills in Kota Kinabalu. The celebrations also reflect the rich cultural history of Kota Kinabalu.

During this festival, exotic hand made village handicrafts are available for sale. Other festivals held during this time include The Harvest Festival Regatta, The Annual exhibition on paintings and handicrafts, and the Sabah Dragon Boat Race. The Merdeka Regatta is held over a period of one week with more than 12 races to determine champions in different classes of boats.

National Day is celebrated in Sabah like the entire country of Malaysia on 31st August. The roads are beautifully decorated and the festival is celebrated with parades and shows. Pesta Kelapa is a popular event in Kudat with lots of fun and contests. You could catch an interesting exhibition of coconut made products.

The Indian festival of Deepavali is celebrated in all major Malaysian states and Sabah is no such exception. The festival is celebrated marking the good over evil. During this time all Hindu homes are well decorated and brightly lit. Gifts are exchanged during this time.

The KYC Racing Regatta is held in November and teams from all over the world are invited to match their skills against one another. The competition is a knock out one and the winner is selected by the number of wins in the knock out series.

Christmas is also celebrated like any major part of the world in Sabah. The entire place is beautifully decorated. Shopping centers, hotels and old folk homes are beautifully decorated.
