Selangor like most Malaysian states celebrates all major festivals in the Malaysian Calendar. Celebrations are grand and colorful, like most places in Malaysia.
Some of the major festivals celebrated in Selangor include Chinese New Year when friends and relatives great each other and give red packets, known as ang pows which are a token of prosperity. Celebrations are held with feats and lion dances to ward off evil spirits and usher in the lunar New Year. Family reunion dinners are a must among Chinese on the eve of the New Year. The celebrations are usually held in February.
Selangor, just like the entire country celebrates the National Day on August 31st with parades and shows. The roads and houses are beautifully decorated and brightly lit up in the evenings for the grand occasion. It is really a wonderful sight.
Malaysia Fest is a celebrated for two weeks where all major hotels and shopping centers join forces to feature the culture, cuisine and handicrafts of the various states in Malaysia. The Indian festival of Deepavali is celebrated in Selangor during the month of October or November as per the Hindu calendar. The festival is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. Hindu homes during this festival are beautifully lit up and sweets and gifts are exchanged among friends and relatives.
Christmas is celebrated just like any other major part of the world in Selangor. Midnight services are held in churches in Selangor on Christmas Eve. Shopping malls, shops and hotels are beautifully decorated and are abuzz with Christmas Carols. The revelry and yuletide spirit of Christmas is enjoyed by Christians and non Christians alike.
Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is celebrated by Muslims after the month-long Ramadan which happens to mark the end of the fasting month. Muslims usher in the New Year with prayers in the mosques followed by receiving well-wishers in their homes.
