There are number of festivals that are celebrated in Malaysia. Chinese New Year is also celebrated in Malaysia with much man fanfare as in China by the Chinese community living in Malaysia as well as locals and tourists.
Chinese New Year is the most important festival of the Chinese Community and is celebrated over a period of 15 days. The welcoming of the Chinese New Year is celebrated with much joy and is marked by family reunions, giving of red packets or 'ang pow' to their children and also among relatives and well wishers. Mandarin Oranges are also distributed. The distribution of ang pow and mandarin oranges is practiced because it is believed that it brings good luck to the recipient. During the Chinese New Year Celebrations, offerings are also made to appease the Gods and Spirits.
Chinese New Celebrations are marked by the purchase and wearing of new clothes. The color red is prominently displayed in most Chinese homes prominently for prosperity and luck. The traditional lion and dragon dances herald in the New Year amidst the beating of drums and gongs.
The 15th Day of the Chinese New Year is known as Chap Goh Mei. This day is celebrated in a noisy manner with the bursting of firecrackers and merrymaking among friends and family.
