Merdeka Celebrations are held throughout the country of Malaysia on the occasion of Malaysian Independence Day. The 31st day of August witnesses a myriad of parades, cultural performances and street shows.
Malaysia gained independence on the historic day of 31st August 1957 when the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysia national flag was first hoisted by the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj leading people to chant slogans such as "Merdeka, Merdeka".
Merdeka Celebrations have been held with grandeur for over 30 years, since 1957. Celebrations include parades involving uniformed personnel, corporate players, school children, cultural dancers, athletes and Malaysians from all walks of life. In recent years, Merdeka Celebrations have grown and have become a month long celebration in the whole of Malaysia.
The day of 31st August 2007 will mark a significant milestone in the history of Malaysia when she will witness the golden jubilee celebrations of her independence.
