The flag is constituted of 14 interchanging red and white stripes and a blue canton comprising of a crescent and 14-point star, known as the Bintang Persekutuan or Federal Star. The 14 stripes and the 14 points of the star signify the 13 states and the three federal territories of Malaysia. The crescent and the star have got their symbolic significance; both symbolize the religion of Islam, the official religion of the country. The blue canton is symptomatic of the integrity and harmony of the Malaysian people. The color combination of the flag also has its symbolic significance; the yellow of the crescent and the star is the royal color representing the rulers of the country; red signifies courage and white is symptomatic of purity.
The design of the Flag of Malaysia suggests that it was clearly inspired by flag of United States and the British East India Company flag which also had a similar design.
The Flag of Malaysia thus encapsulates the prime features of the country and focuses on the unity and integrity of the country.
