The history of Selangor dates back to as early as the 16th Century. It was during this time that rich deposits of tin were found the region. The area has a number of advantages such as natural wealth, along with the relative freedom of the presence of Dutch attracted numerous miners, immigrants and colonizers. A group of settlers were known as the Bugis, a group of Malay people. These groups of people were known to be prominent sea traders and warriors and soon rose to prominence in Selangor. By 1700, the Bugis had dominated the state politically and economically and also established the present Sultanate of Selangor.
Selangor extended its sphere of influence to become a regional political power over the course of the eighteenth century. Western colonial influence began to rise over the next century because of in-fighting between the Bugis, Chinese and Malay and this nobility forced Selangor to accept the presence of a British resident in 1874. However, this unsurprisingly proved out to be rather obstinate. Selangor was included in the Federated Malay States by the British. It was also during this time that the rubber cultivation began in Malaysia and in 1948 the state joined the Federation of Malaya.
Federation of Malaya became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations in 1957. The capital city of Kuala Lumpur in 1974 was ceded to the Federal Government for the establishment of a Federal Territory Wilayah Persekutuan.
Selangor today is the most rich and developed state in Malaysia. It is home to the largest port in the country, Port Klang, and also to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
