Dataran Lang, Langkawi has become one of the major attractions and landmarks of the island. The whole concept of this 19-acre landmark was conceived by Malaysia's Prime Minister is a major attraction to the visitors debarking at the Kuah Jetty. One of the most photographed landmarks of the island, comprises of a giant and regal sculpture of a reddish brown eagle which is the source of the name of the island. Local Folklore of the island suggests that "Kawi" in Malay means a reddish brown eagle and "Lang" is the abbreviated term for helang or eagle. Thus the state of Langkawi is known as "Eagle State".
The location has become popular with the tourists because of the serene and tranquil ambience that makes it the ideal location for leisurely strolls or a romantic dinner in one of the nearby restaurants.
The landmark boasts of elegant and ornate designs and unique architectural concepts and also features picturesque terraces, ponds, bridges, restaurants and barrel vaults, made of brick.
The landmark looks majestic at night with all the illuminations and lights and the entire place along with the sea creates a dramatic ambience.
Overall Dataran Lang is one of the premier tourist destinations in the island and it has become synonymous with the existence of Langkawi Island.
