Malacca Airports have contributed significantly to the tourism of the regions; they receive visitors from all across the world and the country. Batu Berendam Airport is the main airport of the region that serves Malacca. Located 10 kms from the city of Malacca, the airport is spread across 140.71 acres of land and boasts of a 1372 meter runaway. However, the runway is too short for larger aircrafts and the earth breaking ceremony of the airport occurred April 1, 2006 and in the upcoming 30 months the airport will be completely upgraded. The upgradation is also necessary to meet the demands of the increasing number of business and leisure travelers traveling to the state.
After upgradation the airport will boast of facilities like 7000 meter new and fully equipped terminal complex that will fulfill all the demands of the international and local visitors. The old control tower will also be replaced with a new one with latest and advanced aeronautic devices. The runways will also have adequate facilities to guide night landing.
Apart from the three major airlines operating in the airport, Berjaya Air, Merpati Nusantara Airlines, Riau Airlines, Air Asia, one of the most popular low cost carriers, is eager to operate flights from the Batu Berendam Airport after the renovation.
Apart Batu Berendam Airport there are also other major airports located near Malacca like Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Singapore Airport and Penang International Airport.
