On the northern bank of the River Sarawak in the district of Kuching are largely Malay kampungs. Over hilltop of Malay kampungs is Fort Margherita. Rajah Charles Brooke built this fort in 1878 AD as a gesture of love for his wife Margherita. Today the fort houses the Police Museum.
Court House
The Court House is one of the most splendid buildings in Sarawak and an important landmark. The seat of government during the reign of the white rajahs, the Court House was completed in 1874 AD. The impressive front wall along with the door, window grilles and roof panels of the Court House has complicated local art designs. A stunning clock tower was added to the building in 1883 AD with an obelisk commemorative plaque to Rajah Charles Brooke officially specially made in 1924.
Sunday Open Market

The Sunday Open Market, also known as Pasar Minggu, enjoys an ideal location within the city near the famous Satok Suspension Bridge. Although a Sunday market, the market activity begins as early as Saturday afternoon. The Bidayuh women folks bring all sorts of jungle and local produce to the market from the outskirt longhouses. Tropical fruits, variety of vegetables, a local specialty-sago worms and a rare jungle produce-miding are found in the market.
Camp Permai Serawak
At a distance of 32 km from Kuching, the place is spread over 18 hectares of tropical rain forest. The Camp Permai of Sarawak is set up here where you can enjoy real closeness with the nature and savor the picturesque sights of the region. Take a dip in the clear cool water from the running streams and walk along the track partly built on stilt above the rough terrain. |
