Penang Butterfly Farm, Penang is one of the major attractions of Malaysia. Located just 15 minutes away from the Batu Ferringhi, it is the world's first tropical live butterfly sanctuary. It was established in the year 1986 and boasts of 4000 live butterflies of 150 different species; it also features a nature park with small reptiles in their natural habitats as well as the Museum of Asian Artefacts. David Goh is the founder of the Penang Butterfly Farm; he was inspired by Mr. Clive Farrell owned Stratford Butterfly Farm at Stratford-on-Avon in England, to the butterfly farm in Malaysia.
Penang Butterfly Farm allows the visitors to observe the butterflies at close quarters as they enjoy themselves amidst natural settings and besides this there is also exhibition of reptiles and insects, attracting large numerous tourists. The farm also boasts of a number of rare and endangered species of butterflies like the Indian Leafl and Yellow Bird wing. You can also buy mementos of the place from the souvenir shop selling butterfly-related paraphernalia.
The Butterfly Farm has expansion plans and in the near future will include a night zoo, featuring nocturnal creatures and tropical insects.
