Penang Hill, Penang is one of the premier tourist attractions in Penang. It is a hill resort situated six kilometers form the city center of Georgetown and is constituted of numerous peaks, pretty gardens, an old fashioned kiosk, a restaurant, a hotel and an opulent Hindu Temple. Locally known as Bukit Bendara, it rises 821 m above Georgetown and comprises of hilly granitic mass.
Penang Hill also provides respite from the sticky heat as it boasts of a cooler environment. Infact its pleasant weather contributes to the popularity of the place amongst the tourists. The average temperature of the place is generally ranges from 20 degree to 27 degree Celsius, the period between June and October is the coolest whereas the phase between December and April is hottest.
As far as the flora of Penang Hill is concerned, the most common type of forest found here is dipterocarp forest and at higher altitudes submontane oak-laurel and coniferous trees are found. Penang Hill is also home to some to some of the rare and endangered species like the parasitic plant Exorhopalia ruficeps and witch hazel Maingaya malayana.
The fauna of the place is variegated; you can see here wild boars, small and medium sized mammals such as the squirrels, monkeys and tree shrews. You can also witness here a number of nocturnal species like civets, flying lemurs, flying civets and bats.
Penang Hills also boast of a rich bird fauna. Ornithologists have recorded here more than100 species ranging from the common garden species to rare deep forest inhabitants.
