Perak is characterized by farmland and rustic plantations. The rustic plantations are set against a background of green jungle and rugged limestone hills. Perak lies between Kedah in the North and Selangor in the South. The Main Range Mountains cut across the State of Perak.

Perak is known for its historical museums and monuments. Some of the most popular historical monuments include Birch Memorial Clock Tower, Perak Tong, State Museum, State Mosque, Geological Museum, At Michael's Institution, The Perak Museum, Royal Museum and Ubudiah Mosque.

Some of the popular dining options in the State of Perak include Wooley Food Center on Jalan Beach, Medan Selera on Jalan Gopeng and Medan Selera Stadium that has a variety of food stalls. Ipoh in Perak is known for some good food especially for the reasonably priced Chinese dishes. Some of the popular dishes include soup noodles, fried flat rice noodles, and chicken rice with bean sprouts. Fruits are also very popular in Perak. The most popular fruit is Pomelo which is a large juicy citrus fruit and is looks like a football. Guavas are also widely available. Other seasonal fruits include mangoes, rambutans, durians and mangosteens.

You will come across numerous shopping centers in Ipoh and other small towns of Perak. You will find everything ranging from apparel to electric goods. If you are looking for local products, you could try the street bazaars where bargaining is also allowed. Some of the items you will come across in these bazaars include handicrafts, clothing, household utensils, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Bukit Merah Laketown is a must see Resort which includes the Orang Utan Island. It is the only Orang Utan sanctuary in Peninsular Malaysia and is home to 11 Borneo Orang Utans of different ages. Visitors can take a boat ride from the resort jetty. A short walk leads you to tunnel cage at the edge of the rainforest. Once you enter this cage, you will find orang utans climbing up and down walls, swinging and feeding on fresh fruits in their natural habitat. An animal show is also staged four times daily.
