There are many sites in the Sarawak that bears testimony to the historical and cultural heritage of the state. Sarawak Museum, Sarawak is one such site; the old building of the museum was build in the year 1891 and later on in the year 1911 the building was extended and renovated. The museum was build to showcase the indigenous arts, crafts and species of animals found in the area.
Since the time it was opened to the public the museum has undergone numerous changes in its structure. The architectural style of the museum is European; the galleries of the museum are adorned with dormer windows. Presently the museum is looked after and maintained by the government. The old building of the museum houses exhibitions that highlights the history of Sarawak. The ground floor of the building is dedicated to the natural history of the state and boasts of specimens of the animal kingdom of the state that includes reptiles, mammals, birds, etc.
The first floor of the building hosts exhibition of ethnographic artifacts that includes the indigenous musical instruments, models of longhouses of the different ethnic groups of Sarawak, various kinds of fish and animal traps, handicrafts, models of boats and others.
Dewan Tun Abdul Razak is a gallery in the museum that was opened in the year 1983 and named after the second Prime Minister of Malaysia. The gallery highlights the history, culture and arts of the state. The galley also boasts of a souvenir shop that sells traditional arts materials, T-shirts, books and many other things.
