The State of Selangor is divided in to nine administrative districts. There are two airports in the state of Selangor. Among these include the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the gateway to the country of Malaysia. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located in Sepang. The other airport is situated in Petaling namely the Sultan Aziz Shah Airport previously known as the Subang International Airport.
Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport situated in Petaling serves general aviation and some turboprop domestic flights. The airport was planned to be converted to a low cost carrier airport but the move was opposed to by Petaling residents. The airline served as Kuala Lumpur's primary airport until the present Kuala Lumpur International Airport became operational in 1998. The airport used to boast of having the longest runway in Southeast Asia.
The airport had three terminals by 1990. One terminal was used by Singapore and Malaysia Airlines and the other terminal was used as a domestic terminal. One terminal was used for international flights. The airport suffered at least two major fires which resulted in flights being diverted to other major airports in the country. AirAsia had planned to make the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport as its hub but the plan was rejected and the Malaysian government now plans to turn the airport into an international airport.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located in Sepang, Selangor and is now the main airport in Kuala Lumpur since 1998. Some of the flights that operate from here include Air Asia, Air India Express, Austrian Airlines, Cathay pacific, Emirates, Gulf Air, KLM Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysian Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Transaero Airlines.
The Kuala Lumpur International Airport at has a state of the art baggage handling system. There are 216 counters for baggage check in anytime. There are 8 short-term carpark baggage check-in counters, 8 bus & train stations baggage check-in counters and 3 stage baggage security screening system. Some of the facilities available within the terminal include Automated Teller Machines, information counters and information kiosks with touch screens, fitness center, showers, sauna and spa, Muslim prayer rooms, nursery and children's play area, post office, health/medical services, passenger assistance centre, dining outlets, quiet rooms, shopping and smoking areas.
