Khoo Kongsi, Penang

Khoo Kongsi is the grandest clan temple in Penang Malaysia. The temple is one of the attractions in Penang, Malaysia.

Khoo Kongsi is one of the most beautiful temples in Penang. The history of the temple dates back to the Khoo family, who had emigrated from China and built it as clan house for their extended family. Construction on the clan house began in 1853 and was completed in 1898. The building looked magnificent upon completion. The roof of the building caught fire because of its resemblance, some believe, to the Emperor's palace in China.

The Khoo Kongsi Temple building boasts of a magnificent hall which is embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beams. The beams and decorations are made of finest wood bearing the mark of master craftsmen from China.

Khoo Kongsi Temple is open daily from 9AM in the morning till 5PM in the evening. However permission must be obtained from Kongsi officials to enter the building. A minor admission fee is charged from visitors.
