History of Peru

The history of Peru is as fascinating as the country itself is. Peru has a history and cultural heritage dating back to thousand of years. According to recent archeological evidences, the human settlement in Peru had existed as early as 11,000 BC. Around the 13th century BC, cultures such as the Chavín, Chimú, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco migrated into the region, now known as Peru, from the north. Chavin apparently built the first architectural monuments in the region around 900 BC. Around 300 BC the Chavin inexplicably disappeared form Peru, and several new cultures such as the Paracas culture and the Moche and Nazca cultures emerged on the scene during 300-100 BC. But most of these cultures eventually disappeared from Peru soon and there was little unity in the successive cultures of Peru during the next 500 years.

The Inca, who were originally a tribe living in a semiarid region of the southern sierra, emerged as a powerful rulers of Peru during 12-15th century AD. By 1500 AD, the Inca Empire stretched on a large part of present-day Ecuador to central Chile. The Incas built some of the most fascinating architecture in medieval Peru, remains of which still exist in and around Cusco and Machu Picchu. The Inca Empire ended with the conquest of Cusco by the Spanish under Francisco Pizarro, who founded Lima in 1535.

The discontent among people against the Spanish rule in Peru started in the first quarter of the 19th century AD. An uprising by local European inhabitants against the Spanish colonial rule in 1821 provided an opportunity to Peru to declare its independence from Spain. Spain made several futile attempts to regain its rule in Peru, but finally recognized its independence in 1879. The same year Peru and Bolivia went on a four-year war with Chile over territorial disputes, resulting into defeat of Peru. During the 20th century AD, Peru settled its boundary disputes with neighbors, like with Chile in 1929, with Colombia in 1932, and with Ecuador in 1942. Today, Peru is a liberal democratic country in South America.
