The Chavín de Huantar was an important ceremonial center since the first millennium BC that remained famous until the Inca period, giving an insight into the rich cultural heritage of Peru. The site primarily comprises of two main structures - the Templo Antiguo (Old Temple) and Templo Nuevo (New Temple). Porbably built at the end of the second millennium BC, the Old Temple has a central court, known for its impressive obelisks and the image of a divinity- El Lanzon with beautiful carvings depicting animals and birds such as jaguars, caymans, snakes, hawks and mythical beasts. The interior of the temple once had a labyrnith of passageways, chambers and water conduits.
The New Temple is actually an extension of the Old Temple, built between 500 and 200 BC. It also had a rectangular court, hidden passageways and platforms with stone stairways, along with several amazing sculptures. The best time to visit Chavín de Huantar is June to August.
