Lian Shan Shuang Lin Temple, Singapore spans a land area of about forty thousand square meters which is the ownership property of a well to do Chinese Hokkien merchant, Low Kim Pong, who is also an adherent of Buddhism. This origin of this temple is intricately related to a popular belief. As the legend goes, Low Kim Pong had a vision of a golden hue emanating over the sea in the west. Low found it reason enough to be considered a portend and went to the coast to be met by a Hokkien family who had committed themselves to Buddhism and were on their way home from a pilgrimage in Sri Lanka. They were convinced by Low Kim Pong to stay in Singapore and propagate the faith on the condition that he would build a temple especially for the purpose. When Lian Shan Shuang Lin Temple, Singapore, was built, Xian Hui, the head of the family became its first abbot. Today the temple stands tall as the representative of the cultural roots of the Chinese immigrants in Singapore.

However the temple was allowed to degenerate to a dilapidated condition till carpenters, sculptors and artisans were brought in from China to refurbish it. Inspired by the Xichang Temple in the Fujian province, this temple has a Singaporean flavor to it. In fact is a synthesis of the Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Zhanzhou architectural elements.
