This specific section informs you all about the different variants of Language of Singapore you would probably be surprised to learn that Singapore officially recognizes four separate languages; English, Chinese or Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. There is a strong historical reason behind this. English obviously because Singapore was an erstwhile British colony, having become independent as recently as 1965. Chinese or Mandarin is spoken by nearly 80% of the local populace as they are of Chinese origin. Next come the Malays or ethnic race of Malaysia who incidentally are all Muslims. This is also why there are so many mosques in Singapore. See our section on Singapore Places of Worship Recognizing the fact that there is a sizeable presence of Tamil speaking people as well, both of South Indian (from Chennai) and Sri Lankan origin; the government of Singapore has made Tamil an official language too.
Hence everywhere, at the MRT stations, bus terminals, malls, at the Airports in Singapore and at the river tour jetties - you will observe signboards in all four official Language of Singapore namely, English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
Of course other languages such as Thai, Japanese and Philipino are spoken as well by those belonging to the respective nationalities.
Interestingly there is another language, albeit unofficial - Singaporean colloquial English, ya la! Singlish. Just add the phrase 'la' or 'leh' and use the words can, cannot and already profusely and voila - you will be glibly mouthing Singlish! All there is to it is a masala sprinkling of Malay and Chinese with a dash of Tamil sambar, believe it or not Singlish is what you will hear in the streets of Singapore.
