After apartheid, the new provinces were made to give the local governments more resources to allocate uniformly in the smaller areas. The new provinces are: Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape.
