Some of the major Festivals of Ayutthaya are; Bang Sai Arts and Crafts Fair, Bang Sai Loi Krathong (the festival of lights ) and International Boat Race, Ayutthaya Loi Krathong and Ayutthaya World Heritage Site commemoration Festival. Of course, Songkran or Thai New Year is celebrated as well, in Autthaya.
In the middle of April, all over Thailand; and in Ayutthaya - the festival of 'Songkran' is celebrated with pomp. Songkarn symbolizes traditional Thai New Year festivities and the highlight of these celebrations are boat races on the Mekong River and Wang River where Laos, Vietnamese, Burmese and Chinese oarsmen compete against each other. A visual delight for the looking spectators! So keep those cameras handy to capture the excitement of the race - a suggestion from Travour that you should take.
This period during Songkran, is probably the most colorful and active in the Thai Festivals of Ayutthaya festival calendar. Along with grand celebrations in neighboring Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong and Mae Chan, the celebration of Thai New Year customs in Ayutthaya involve some specific traditional practices. Prominent among them are offerings of food and essential provisions to Buddhist monks in the early hours of the morning. As this is a predominantly Buddhist ceremony, during midday you will witness the 'robe changing ceremony 'of the deity of Lord Buddha - followed by transferring of blessings to the devotees assembled there through a 'merit making ' ceremony.
You will observe this special divine practice of 'merit making' in the Buddhist temple called Wat Na Phra Meru Ayutthaya
