The 2010 Winter Games torch relay will follow the longest route in the history of Winter Olympic Games. The Olympic torch will begin its journey from Athens in Greece in October 2009. The lighting of the flame will be followed by a ceremony. The torch will then follow a route called the ‘Path of the Northern Lights’ covering 35,000 km over a period of 100 days.
The route has already been announced and it will travel from coast to coast in Canada. The torch will travel directly from Greece to the North Pole to the high Arctic region in Canada, and from there to the West Coast from where it will arrive at the BC Stadium in Vancouver just before the opening ceremony. The torch relay for 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is expected to create a wide interest among all Canadians. People from all parts of Canada, regardless of their age, race and religion are expected to take part in the torch race.
For the first time in history, the Olympic torch will burn indoors. Although there have been speculations about the environmental hazards of letting a torch burn indoors for fifteen days, some special ventilation will certainly be arranged to counter this problem.
