UBC Thunderbird Arena

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games joined hands with the University of British Columbia to establish the UBC Thunderbird Arena, a fascinating venue for the grand games commencing in 2010. The Thunderbird Winter Sport Complex is situated in a perfect spot ideal for hosting such popular events as per the international standards

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is located on a sprawling oceanside campus on Vancouver’s west side. The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) secured an agreement with UBC to locate a new competition arena for the 2010 Winter Games on the site of the existing Thunderbird Winter Sport Complex. The UBC Thunderbird Arena Winter Olympic site has a spectator capacity of 7,200 and is hoisted atop the alpine mountains of British Columbia at an elevation of 90 meters. The place has been constructed and presently restructured for holding ice hockey tournaments and the ice sledge hockey events for men.

A considerable extent of speculation has been done when laying the construction plans for the UBC Thunderbird Arena Olympic venue by the joint venture of the Governments of Canada and British Columbia to transform the former Thunderbird Winter Sport Complex into a high definition ice hockey training and competition venue as per the international standards. The place also holds the potential to emerge as one of the major recreational and community sport centers of the future.

The UBC Thunderbird Arena Olympic site boasts of a number of sustainable attributes that include the green construction strategy as per the review of the environmental assessment initiative. The existing facilities are upgraded for improving the overall ambiance of the site for hosting future international sporting events. Aboriginal Arts Program is working in unison with VANOC to establish exhibition centers for aboriginal artworks as a part of the opening celebration of the 2010 Winter Games. Both traditional and contemporary artworks will be on display as a part of the ceremony for the big games.
